The need for speed
Enable soldiers to record their reflections for training and education activities undertaken as professional soldiers.
Develop an app based on an existing print-based reflective journal and add enhancements using the capabilities of modern devices. Specifically, add functionality for reminders, search, and user statistics.
Release the app as soon as feasible to support the release of Cove+, the Army’s Professional Military Development program.

SOLUTION
Cross platform
To develop the Reflective Journal app Interserv chose to use Xamarin, an open-source platform for building Android, iOS, and .NET apps with C#. The advantages of this approach were reuse of a large portion of the app’s code across all target operating systems and the benefits of maintaining a single codebase. This approach greatly facilitated the rapid development and release of the Reflective Journal app.

Fast turnaround time
The initial idea for the Reflective Journal was briefed on the 14th of July 2020, and the first public version was released to stores on the 10th of September 2020. In less than three months the app went from idea to availability.
